coffee beans stand a chance of winning? And what type of processing do they have to go through to be in with a chance of winning the world's strongest coffee?
Welcome to the Prestigious Awards in the Power of Coffee. Which types of-
COFFEE TYPE category nominations
Only representatives of the Robusta variety have a chance here. The beans from this coffee plant clearly have the highest caffeine content - about 2.3 grams per 100 grams compared to Arabica with 1.6 grams per 100 grams. The remaining frequently used varieties are already well behind in this indicator and cannot be counted on to participate.
-
Nominations in the COFFEE PREPARATION METHOD category
The strongest coffee is brewed as espresso, cold brew or drip.
-
Nominations in the BREWING LEVEL category
Roasting degree has a direct impact on both flavor strength and caffeine content. The higher the roast grade, the stronger you will find the coffee in terms of flavour. At the same time, the caffeine content decreases slightly as the roast level increases.
-
Nominations in the GRINDNESS category
The finer grind, used for example for espresso machines, gives rise to a stronger coffee with a more pronounced flavour and aroma. In contrast, the coarser grinds used for filter coffee and cold brew methods, while slightly skimming off the flavour, can increase the caffeine content. This, of course, is also related to the brewing time. Related to this, we must also mention the fact that the time elapsed between grinding and brewing also has an effect on the strength of the coffee. A coffee that you buy already ground will beat the same type with the same roasting grade and grinding coarseness if it has been freshly ground before preparation.
In practice, this means that the strength of the coffee will be affected not only by the type of coffee itself, but also by the degree of roasting, the coarseness of the grind and the method of preparation.
So what specific products should you consider if you want a drink that will be among the clear favourites in our competition?
The strongest highly caffeinated coffees:
-
DEATH WISH COFFEE
Probably the world's most popular highly caffeinated coffee, boasting a caffeine content of around 730mg in a 350ml cup. It's a blend of Arabica and Robusta that excels with low acidity and a chocolate-cherry flavour. In a single cup of well-prepared coffee, Death Wish Coffee offers roughly double the usual amount of caffeine.
-
BIOHAZARD COFFEE
This is a lightly roasted Robusta with a manufacturer's caffeine content of 928 mg in 350 ml of beverage. Biohazard Coffee consumers agree that its taste is only slightly bitter with traces of nuts, chocolate and a hint of tobacco.
-
DEVIL MOUNTAIN COFFEE
The brand's flagship product is the so-called Black Label coffee, one cup (350 ml) of which is believed to contain 1,555 mg of caffeine, more than three times the recommended daily allowance. Despite the utterly shocking amount of caffeine, Devil Mountain Coffee is said to taste good with no signs of excessive bitterness.
-
BLACK INSOMNIA
And here we get above 1,000 mg of caffeine in 350 ml of drink (the manufacturer gives a value of 1,105 mg). The secret of such a high caffeine content in the case of this Black Insomnia coffee is said to be hidden in the unusual combination of bean type and perfectly balanced roasting.
So the only thing that is certain is that there is no absolute winner. That imaginary "And Oscar goes to..." will no doubt set the already beating hearts of all who have tasted the nominated adepts racing. And the statuette probably deserves to be a travelling one, when you consider how many variables are at play in making the strongest coffee.Strong coffees in our range:
